It's not only retail copies of first-person shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops generating tons of revenue for publisher Activision.
Sales of the map packs available for download on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC have reached 18 million, according to Activision publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg.
"We're thrilled and humbled at the support that we're getting from our fanbase, who seem to have a tremendous amount of passion for the work we're doing and the game that we're making," Hirshberg says of the franchise in an interview with Game Hunters. "We just want to always continue to exceed their expectations."
Activision and studio Treyarch first launched map downloads for Black Ops' multiplayer and Zombies modes in February, with the release of the First Strike pack. It would debut roughly one month later on PS3 and PC.
Since then, three more packs have been released: Escalation, Annihilation and the Zombies-focused Rezurrection.
Black Ops, which launched last November, has sold an astonishing 25 million copies. It's a sharp increase compared to 2009's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 with life-to-date sales of 22 million.
"That is just a spectacular figure," says Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter in an interview last month.
And it's possible the franchise's next installment, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, could shatter sales benchmarks yet again.
"The early response has been off the charts," says Hirshberg. "Every measurable metric that you would judge enthusiasm for the title by is outpacing even the record-setting pace for Black Ops."
Hirshberg also notes pre-orders for Modern Warfare 3 are expected to top Black Ops "by a wide margin."
This weekend, Activision is hosting the Call of Duty XP event in Los Angeles to reveal the first details on Modern Warfare 3'smultiplayer component.
